A new code of practice for fire safety in dwellings, BS9991, has been published and offers significant design flexibility for architects working on domestic schemes. The code complements the previously released BS9999, which excluded residential buildings and enables architects to adopt basic fire engineering principles without employing a fire engineer. As most domestic projects operate on low fee margins, they don't allow for additional consultant appointments, so this is a very significant development and makes BS9991 a must-buy code for even a small practice.
