Found everywhere in the construction industry, timber is commonly specified for its green properties. For most, it visually signals that a building is 'eco' or 'sustainable'. But not all timber is necessarily as green as first perceived. Timber should be carefully specified, and sourcing is important. For minimum embodied impact, timber should be sourced from the UK. The BRE estimates that UK timber can embody as little as 0.52GJ per tonne, in comparison to imported timber which can embody as much as 7.1GJ per tonne.
