Energy efficiency of artificial lighting is covered by Approved Document L and low energy external luminaires can significantly reduce running costs, although higher capital costs will need to be offset. Light fittings which are activated by daylight or people also have a big impact on running costs. Long lamp and fitting lifespans also reduce maintenance costs and these will be optimised if end of life dates are synchronised, simplifying replacement programmes and access. Luminaires and signage can be made from recycled or recyclable materials. Waste from discarded lamps, fittings, wiring and conduit should be avoided. There are also opportunities to generate power from renewable on-site energy sources such as photovoltaic cells.
