Oldfield faces boot

Architecture activist and boat race protester Trenton Oldfield has been refused his application for a spousal visa, which would allow him to remain in the UK, just as his wife is due to give birth. The protest in 2012 by the Australian co-ordinator of the This Is Not A Gateway urban design pressure group landed him a six-month jail sentence for public nuisance. Many thought his time behind bars was disproportionately severe for a 'peaceful act' of protest that caused nothing more than a 25-minute delay to the boat race. But it seems the Home Office remains fearful of Oldfield's next move and he now faces deportation. A spokesperson for the government said Oldfield's 'continued presence in the country was not conducive to the public good'.
