The construction is primarily a load-bearing masonry structure. The decision to use the native Castletown stone from the nearby quarry led to a 560mm-thick external wall construction. The stone is no longer typically used on its own as the external skin of an insulated wall, but rather as a cladding and weathering layer over blockwork and insulation. Neverthefess, the craft involved in shaping and laying the stones is significant. The rough stone is contrasted with fine and crisp concrete detailing. The walls are incised with smooth, precast concrete window surrounds and a slender concrete balcony projects at first floor level.
