Carpets are traditionally avoided by 'deep green' specifiers. Unless they are natural wool, they tend to be made from oil-based synthetics. What's more, the dye used is often synthetic and carpets can be heavily treated with fungicide, fire retardant, stain proofing and antistatic measures meaning they may be continually giving off fumes of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) - which are harmful to the users of the building and the environment.
