Tim Ronalds wins Bradford Odeon gig

Tim Ronalds Architects celebrated a double success this week, getting the green light to rescue Bradford's abandoned Odeon cinema and then winning the contest for the £10 million overhaul of Marlborough College's science facilities. On Tuesday Bradford City Council approved Bradford Live's £19 million bid to convert the empty 1930s cinema, which was almost flattened to make way for a Carey Jones Architects-designed office development, into a 4,000-person capacity venue. The proposed transformation (pictured) by Ronalds will re-invent the building, which closed as a cinema in 2000, as an evening venue hosting major touring live music events. In August this year a rival scheme for the site, drawn up by local practice Halliday Clark Architects, was ruled out of the running (AJ 07.08.14).
