Ott's Yard is vPPR's first completed new build project. It was very important to us that the two houses would form a showcase for our emerging practice, despite the awkward nature of the site and the limited budget. We believe the project shows that conceptually legible, contextually sensitive and immaculately detailed architecture is achievable while still being financially profitable. The houses were built on the site of a derelict joinery workshop at the centre of a triangular residential block in north London. They are surrounded by 23 party walls and accessed via a long, narrow passageway. The plans are based on an abstraction of the existing triangular geometry of the site: two houses, each with its own garden, and a shared communal courtyard emerge out of a pin-wheel fractal pattern. The sloping roofs of the houses are planted according to the same geometry, designed with landscape architect Arabella Lennox-Boyd.
