The world-renowned Burrell Collection, the art collection of shipping merchant and philanthropist Sir William Burrell (1861-1958), is housed in a museum in Glasgow's Pollok Country Park designed by Barry Gasson Architects and completed in 1983. Medieval stone doors and stained glass windows are incorporated into the Modernist fabric of the museum, which contains about 9,000 exhibits, including significant collections of Chinese, late Gothic and early Renaissance European and 19th and 20th century French art. The museum was designed to integrate into its parkland surroundings and the glazed walls allow dappled light to filter through.
