LEIPZIG SHINES IN DUBROVNIK

The regeneration of Richard-Wagner-Platz in the German city of Leipzig beat rival schemes in Copenhagen and Strasbourg to land the top prize in Philips' 12th annual lighting awards, which took place in the Croatian city of Dubrovnik in November last year. Organized by Philips and the Lighting Urban Community International Association (LUCI), the city.people.light awards recognise urban lighting projects which best demonstrate creative efforts to plan sustainable lighting infrastructure into townscape redevelopment initiatives for the benefit and wellbeing of those who live, work, visit or do business in the city. The site of a 10th century market settlement from which the city of Leipzig was born, Richard-Wagner-Platz is steeped in political and architectural history from the Middle Ages through to the fall of Communism. The unique lighting atmosphere carefully matches the city's architecture with warm white light to illuminate buildings, sculptural fountains and a skate park. The result is an atmospheric scheme with contemporary LED lighting, that preserves and highlights historic fixtures and makes significant energy savings for the city.
