THE GATEWAY PAVILIONS, LONDON SE10 MARKS BARFIELD ARCHITECTS

The Gateway Pavilions are a pair of curved glass pavilions joined by a canopy; together they define the southern edge of Peninsula Square and act as a gateway to the Greenwich peninsula. They contain an art gallery, offices, a marketing suite, cafe, restaurant/bar and charcuterie. Drawing heavily on Greenwich's maritime history and the peninsula's industrial heritage, the curved canopy defines the last 'ripple' emanating from the Dome (The O2), echoing the paving with a patinated brass edge. It provides shelter for artistic and community events as well as the cafe and pop-up markets. The roof soffit and surface was inspired by geomagnetic lodestones, which were used as early compasses, tracing a 'magnetic field' pattern linking the centres of the two pavilions.
