BEEHIVE-THEMED UK PAVILION OPENS AT MILAN EXPO 2015

The UK Pavilion atthe2015 Milan Expo was officially opened to the public today (1 May). Designed by Nottingham-based artist Wolfgang Buttress, the competition-winning design features a huge aluminium lattice beehive-like structure to highlight the plight of honeybees, which are suffering widespread colony losses. Visitors walk through an orchard and wildflower meadow before entering the towering structure which 'appears to pulsate and glow according to signals from a real hive'. Buttress said the pavilion aimedto 'transport a piece of the British countrysideto Milan'. Describing how he felt about the completed structure, he said: 'Certain aspects have exceeded my expectations: the way the Hive catches the light and changes with the ambient conditions; the way thatthe glass balustrade in the Hive is almost invisible.' Running until 31 October, the world fair show is themed around feeding the planet and explores the problems of nutrition and sustainable resources.
