The Danish Architects' Association has launched a design competition for a £7.5 million visitor centre next to the medieval Trelleborg Viking fort at Slagelse (pictured). Open to architects, landscape architects and engineers-the contest seeks proposals for a 2,500m~2 exhibition venue telling the 'fascinating story of Viking warriors and the times they lived in'. Featuring classrooms and workshops, the structure will replace an existing 1990s building nearthe late 10th century Viking ring castle, which once housed 1,300 people. The new centre is expected to be 'built from the inside out', drawing on historical and archaeological knowledge to influence its architecture and construction. Landscaping will also be required. According to the brief, the centre'will house a new exhibition on Viking warriors, life in a military ring castle and fortifications during the Viking Age.
