The facades of the timber houses respond to their immediate environment, while maintaining a simple unifying palate of materials, and explore ideas of surface, rhythm and substance. Each house is 2.5 storeys to the perimeter, with the whole scheme sunk 1.2m into the site. Here the rainscreen is formed in 42×42mmThermowood battens fixed vertically at 52mm centres, broken at floor levels by a horizontal sill of the same material, also forming the head of windows at lower ground floor and the sill of windows at first floor. The fine vertical timbers become a background for both the garden setting and the landscape timber windows set into the elevations.
