The concept for this small rear extension to the back of a listed terrace in Mile End, east London, came from the need to retain the garden's existing fences. These inspired the extension's timber cladding, which was made to match thefences, thereby blending the project instantly into the surrounding context. A high-spec glazing system provided a seamless connection between the new living space and the garden, and this was reinforced by the way the internal floor finish was carried through into the courtyard.
