Journalist Simon Jenkins has criticised the Twentieth Century Society's bid to save Basil Spence's Hyde Park Barracks from demolition. The Guardian columnist and former National Trust chair said the move was 'simply outrageous' because it could block a 'lovely' alternative - such as Francis Terry's Classically styled residential proposal - being built on the prime west London site. Jenkins said: 'I don't mind listing "distinctive" historic buildings, but listing ugly and prominent ones is perverse, especially if it stops lovely ones from going up. I have to endure Spence's awful Kensington and Chelsea Town Hall next door to me. It is an offence against the streetscape.'
