Dennis Gilbert, 1951-2021

I had heard of Dennis Gilbert long before I got to meet him. As a would-be architectural photographer, his work was familiar to me - he was prolific, and set a standard that one aspired to.When I did eventually get to meet him I was immediately struck by his warm nature and generosity of spirit. We had both photographed the same building: O'Donnell + Tuomey's Photographers' Gallery in London. Dennis had been commissioned by the architects, and I by the AJ. He said my photos were better than his (they weren't) but it was praise indeed.Later, 1 got to know him much better when he invited me and fellow photographer Kilian O'Sullivan to join him in the monumental task of documenting the ongoing redevelopment of Battersea Power Station. I discovered that such behaviour was typical of Dennis. He was always one for encouraging younger photographers, offering advice from his vast experience and organising social events and post-production workshops.
