Entrance doors to flats have a number of functions to fulfil, and conflicting regulatory requirements limit the options available. Firstly, the front entrance door will need to be a certified fire door which is fitted with a self-closing device. While that seems to be a simple requirement, it was made more complicated in 2018 when the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government found that a glazed, composite fire door from Grenfell Tower, manufactured by Manse Masterdor, failed a 30-minute fire-resistance test after approximately 15 minutes. Issues were subsequently identified with other similar doors produced by three other manufacturers, which also failed fire-resistance tests. As a result, a number of test certificates were withdrawn from the market.
