Foster + Partners has held on to its position at the pinnacle of the AJ100 thanks to its strength in key international markets such as Asia, the Middle East and the USA. The number of architects working at the practice's UK headquarters in Battersea rose to 381, up from 362 last year, while architectural fees paid to its UK office stood at £198 million, compared with £155 million 12 months earlier. 'Overall we had 80 projects under way in 53 cities all over the globe,' says the firm's managing partner, Matthew Streets, of 2019. 'It was a strong year.' Projects completed during 2019 range from five new Apple stores, including the remodelled Fifth Avenue branch in New York, a new London store for sustainable fashion brand Gabriela Hearst, a major new building for an emerging medical campus in Cleveland, Ohio, and the Comcast Technology Center, now Philadelphia's tallest tower. Major project wins included big masterplans in China and North America, as well as a new office for e-commerce giant Alibaba in Shanghai.
