Roger Scruton, the controversial philosopher and head of the government's beauty commission, died on Sunday (12 January), aged 75. The outspoken intellectual and champion of conservatism, who wrote nearly 50 books on aesthetics, politics and morals, had been suffering from cancer. In 2018 Scruton was appointed chair of the government's Building Better, Building Beautiful Commission but was fired following a row over comments he made in an interview with The New Statesman, He was reinstated after the magazine published a clarification of Scruton's comments on China and antisemitism.
