Industrial chic

A decade of regeneration at a small steel factory in rural north Germany has resulted in a juxtaposition of remnants of Germany's industrial past and crisp, contemporary architecture. While creating new production facilities at Stahlwerk Augustfehn, Finkernagel Ross has captured the unique heritage of the factory by restoring and displaying industrial artefacts in the new and repurposed buildings. These unearthed artefacts of a bygone era include a painstakingly restored former factory clock, a listed steam engine dating from 1902 and several original steel hammers. For Shoreditch and Hamburg-based practice Finkernagel Ross, Stahlwerk Augustfehn has been one of those rare projects best described as an ongoing journey, a series of works born out of a relationship with a rather particular yet willing client.
