This is the first book dealing solely with humannburial in the Middle and Late Anglo-Saxonnperiods. Although not designed to cover thensubject comprehensively, its ten papers givena good impression of a rich field of research.nNo fewer than six are case studies based onnspecific sites, two of which are effectively interimnreports on excavations at the significant sitesnof Worcester Cathedral and Bamburgh. Thenothers explicitly illustrate and develop inter-npretative approaches. Nick Stoodley and AnnianCherryson’s surveys of sites in and around thenwı ¯c of Southampton are exemplary in showingnthe relevance of context (both regional andnurban): not least for the early examples of truenchurchyards at Southampton. HowardWilliams’sndiscussion of seventh-century burials at HarfordnFarm, Norfolk, largely reprises a half-chapternof his 2006 monograph, Death and Memory innEarly Medieval Britain.
