The total number of homicides statewide decreased as well: 388 in 1997 versus 249 in 2005 (a decrease of 36% overall). Because of an increase in overall state population, the relative homicide rate (per 100,000 population) decreased by 41 per cent: 14.4 in 1997 versus 8.5 in 2005. [...] it is logical to assume that such trauma system-driven programs as defensive driving and a major emphasis on seatbelt and car seat use have entered the collective consciousness and have decreased the number of more serious MVCs.
