MEXICO: Middle-American country known for its colors ever present in the streets of towns and villages, home interiors, and artifacts... Perhaps this would be the way a travel guide would start out its description of this multifarious, complex country. This text attempts to wind its way through such colors. Brought forth from deeply embedded traditions, these colors enter artistic contemporary expressions such as architecture, best exemplified in the now classic works of Luis Barragan and subsequent generations of dynamic architects; manifest in the contemporary alternative photography of Carlos Jurado, wringing color from black and white negatives created from handmade cameras, emulsions, and layers of filters; or impacting the spectator's eye in both abstract and pictorial paintings of Mexican muralists of the twentieth century, from the classic large-scale works to its
