A STUDY OF FLEECE COMPOSITION OF WOOL OF DIFFERENT BREEDS OF SHEEP OF PUNJAB AND JAMMU AND KASHMIR

The studies on fleece composition of wool of three reeds of sheep of Punjab, namely Dorset (exotic) Kajli x Dorset (crossbred) and Kajli (local) and three breeds of Jammu and Kashmir, namely Rambouillet (exotic), Kashmir Merino (crossbred), Kashmir Valley (local) were conducted. Ten wool samples from each of the six breeds totalling to sixty wool samples were selected to study the fleece composition. For mis moisture content, grease and suint content, clean wool yield content and Burr or vegetable matter contents of the fleece were determined according to different ISI specifications. The moisture arid grease and suint content was found to be more in the case of exotic breeds of sheep as compared to crossbreed and local breed and was maximum in the case of Rambouillet, i.e. 9.22 and 29.00 respectively. The burr or vegetable matter content varied from 5.04 to 12.44 per cent and was maximum in local breeds. The correlation co-efficient between moisture and grease and suint content showed a significant difference between local and crossbreed.
