摘要

Come 'festival season' - October onwards -advertisements for sarees pick up. Collections of weaves from all over India are put up for sale by private and government entities alike. The rationale, of course, is that festivals and weddings are the usual time when women splurge on new sarees, as these occasions demand 'traditional' wear. Somehow that thought is curiously depressing. As is the inescapable observation that the clientele at saree exhibitions and stores are most often aged over 35, barring brides looking for additions to their trousseaux. It does seem that the popularity of India's timeless garment is definitely on the wane, at least among the younger lot.
