Development of Phase Change Materials in Clothing Part I: Formulation of Microencapsulated Phase Change

Microcapsules containing phase changenmaterial for textile thermal insulation were synthesizednand characterized. Prior to the encapsulation,nthe formation, the stability and phase change behaviornof paraffin mixture were studied to define annoptimum formulation with a wide temperaturenrange. The addition of approximately 4 wt-% tetraethylnorthosilicate in n-hexadecane-n-eicosanenmixture was found to improve latent heat of phasenchange. Microcapsules with approximately 70 wt-%nparaffin in core material were investigated bynusing Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differentialnscanning calorimetry, thermal gravimetricnanalysis, and scanning electron microscopy.
