Non-mercerized and mercerized knittedncotton fabrics were dyed with the copper-containingnreactive dyes, C.I. Reactive Blue 237 andnC.I. Reactive Blue 71, and pre- and post-mordantednwith copper (II) sulfate. We investigatednthe effects of the type and concentration of dye,nthe type of cotton fabric, and the difference innmordanting methods on ethanethiol deodorizingnability. The deodorizing abilities conferred by premordantingnwith copper sulfate (pre), dyeing (D),ndyeing after pre-mordanting (pre-D) or post-mordantingnwith copper sulfate after dyeing (D-post)nwere in the order D < pre-D < D-post < pre.nThe deodorizing abilities of the sample fabricsnwith higher copper ion uptakes were not necessarilynhigher. The abilities of the mordant-dyed nonmercerizedncotton samples were higher than thosenof the mordant-dyed mercerized cotton samples.nThe mordant-dyed non-mercerized knitted cottonnsamples adsorb larger amounts of copper ionsndirectly bound to cotton during pre-mordanting.nThe ability of the copper ions bound to cotton andnto the dye during pre- or post-mordanting is highernthan that of the copper ions contained in the dyenmolecule. In addition, mordant-dyed cotton fabricsnexhibited antibacterial activity against Staphylococcusnaureus and MRSA, and thus had potentialnas deodorizing/antibacterial fabrics.
