A persisting problem throughout the textile industry has been that of getting heat rapidly and efficiently (thoroughly) into a yarn or fabric. Many years ago a heated bath of mercury was one attempted technique. Fortunately, before anyone was killed, it eventually led to the use of ballotini, the tiny glass beads being agitated to become 'liquid-like' in a heated bed and so provide even heat-transfer at an accelerated rate: the fluid bed. This proved to be an excellent system of heat-treating cords intended for rubber reinforcement, particularly tyre cords.
