In New Jersey, US, in 1961, the first industrial robot – UNIMATE – was implemented on a General Motors assembly line. Its launch preceded a televised appearance on The Tonight Show, an American talk show, where UNIMATE boasted autonomy, handling capabilities and accuracy by playing golf, pouring a beer, and conducting an orchestra. It was set to be the first in a long history of industrial robotic arm technologies. Following robotic developments and implementation around the globe, labour efficiency in manufacturing increased at an average of 20% (and in the trouser sewing industry, as much as 420%), according to a report by V I Shtchorobkov and V G Prytkov titled Robots and Wear. Since robot arms could perform tedious, time-sensitive, or tough laborious jobs around manufacturing facilities, businesses were supported in the expansion of their operations. It made manufacturing simpler. But in the decades since, the requirements of manufacturers have widened. Although robots were able to mimic the movements of the human arm and reduce the necessity of human labour in some tasks like heavy lifting, there was – and remains – prolific difficulty enabling the mimicry of some aspects of human gripping, specifically for intricate tasks handling flimsy materials.
