Since the introduction of the first air-jet Weaving machine in the 1960s there have been major developments enabling the system weave a wide range of fabrics. This article analyses some of the recent developments in air-jet weaving technology. Whilst the first air-jets of 125 cm reed width reached speeds of 350 to 380 rpm, today's state-of-the-art machines are of 190-430 cm reed width to operate at 800 rpm, and even more. Traditionally, the rapier machine is known for its remarkable versatility. But in recent years, the air-jet has advanced much, to weave a wider range of fabrics. The factors that have made this possible are mechanical improvements, application of new materials, improved quality of yarn and the use of electronics.
