摘要

Thomas Wardle's polymathic character left a wide imprint on textile history, difficult to summarize succinctly. Mordants and natural dyes, wild and domesticated silks, and artistic and documentary designs were all encompassed in his activity. This exhibition focuses on his work with the silk industry of British India. In 1899, Wardle recalled in a lecture to the Architectural Association that his study of Indian dyes and textiles began with his commission to print for William Morris, Rather rashly ... I undertook the task, being led on by the charm of his personality ... He limited me to most difficult conditions ... a revival of all the old (and for the most part discontinued) processes of producing and applying colour, and an absolute avoidance of artificial dyes.
