The history of modern medicine outside Europe has travelled a long way from the old diffusionist argument about the simple dissemination and triumph of Western science and medicine in far-flung corners of the globe. In its place, historians now debate the vitality and resilience of non-Western therapeutics, the distinctive (even hybrid) nature of colonial medicine, and the capacity of once 'peripheral' medicine to influence and inform metropolitan ideas, careers, techniques and pharmacopoeias. In Materials and Medicine, Pratik Chakrabarti situates himself centrally within these debates, seeking to understand the nature of medical institutions, healing practices and the use of medicinal substances as these emerged in two critical areas of extra-European (more specifically British) engagement-the West Indies (represented by Jamaica) and the East Indies (specifically the Coromandel coast of southeast India) and for the critical period of the eighteenth century (although it actually encompasses the mid-seventeenth to the early nineteenth centuries).
