As the cover makes clear, this slim volume is a 'case study', accompanying The Tudor Tailor (2006) and timed to coincide with the 500th anniversary of Henry VIII's 1509 accession. It draws comparisons with the earlier book but, as the introduction emphasizes, also benefits from its feedback. Caroline Johnson uses documentary evidence from selected warrants and Great Wardrobe accounts to focus on the dress of male servants in the king's household between 1498 and 1511, covering the reigns of Henries VII and VIII and including those 'of high standing, many more [...] of only moderate status, and some [...] very humble indeed'.
