Inventories, though a key resource for the study of textile and dress history, nevertheless have a reputation as dry, colorless, and inaccessible. The very terminology of these household or probate enumerations may mask layers of contemporary significance, now impenetrable even to specialists. Recent multidisciplinary research, however, has pioneered new paths to unlocking their meanings, led by such scholars as have contributed to this outstanding collection of essays that draw on political, economic, textile and art histories, social studies, conservation skills, and museum curation.
