HIDDEN TREASURE in the Art Gallery of South Australia

The Art Gallery first started collecting garments of historic significance relating to South Australia in the wake of the centenary of the state in 1936. In 1937 the Gallery acquired a collection of thirteen mid-nineteenth century dresses, capes and accessories from Miss G.J. Madigan of St Peters. Since then, the holdings have grown to around six hundred items, mostly nineteenth century dress worn and made in South Australia.
