Oil and gas sector development in India

The year 2005 was significant for the oil and gas sector, as tremendous efforts were made to accelerate domestic exploration activities, and seek acreages abroad so that energy security is ensured for the country. A number of programmes and policy initiatives were introduced for development in the upstream and downstream oil and gas sector. Some of the major developments during the year are as follows. Since 1991, the Government of India has been inviting bids on a regular basis with several rounds of bidding carried out till the operationalization of NELP (New Exploration Licensing Policy).
