The BBC, too, was widely lauded for its decision to run a serial with such harrowing content over five consecutive nights at 7:00pm.rnRatings were healthy: the dramatisation of a teenage Jewish girl's life in hiding from the Nazis averaged 4.2 million viewers when it aired on BBC1 in early January, despite having to compete with ITV1 big hitter Emmerdale - proof, if it were needed, that TV doesn't have to play dumb to win the loyalty of peak-time audiences.
