Hosted by Chris Tarrant, Who's Wants To Be a Millionaire? revolutionised gameshows when it first aired in September 1998. Replete with catch-phrases such as 'Is that your final answer?' and 'But we don't want to give you that', the ITV show captured the imagination of the nation. The format has sold around the world to more than 100 countries. 'In any genre you're looking for a game changer and that was it. When Who's Wants To Be a Millionaire? came along, it asked questions of the whole industry by playing in peak at the heart of the schedules. Until then, game shows weren't doing that,'says Liam Keelan, head of BBC daytime. 'As a viewer, Who's Wants To Be a Millionaire? felt exciting in a way that gameshows traditionally hadn't. It was a real event. The music and the pace it was played out at made it feel like a live show, even though it wasn't,'adds Remarkable Television managing director David Flynn.
