Data privacy approaches from US and EU perspectives

Consumers using the Internet often indicate that the privacy of their personal data is their foremost concern with the new technology. Different approaches to data privacy and pro- tection are found in the United States and the European Union - an emphasis on self-rugu- lation in the former versus strict legal requirements in the latter. The implications of the recent "safe harbor" agreement may have a significant impact on privacy expectations in the US.
