What is so special about the Asia-Pacific region?

The proposal to host a World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) was endorsed by the Council of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) at its 2001 session. The 90th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) officially adopted the proposal on 21 December 2001 as Resolution 56/183. The General Assembly recognized "the urgent need to harness the potential of knowledge and technology for promoting the goals of the United Nations Millennium Declaration (Resolution 55/2) and to find effective and innovative ways to put this potential at the service of development for all". In other words, the aim of the WSIS is to develop a global framework to deal with the challenges posed by the information society.
