摘要

Software Defined Radio (SDR) is the evolution of base station technology. Though too expensive to be considered initially, the technological advancements have turned the new concept to be efficient and cost effective. Several infrastructure vendors have now implemented SDR in their product portfolio. Mobile Operators are now realizing that the new technology can provide significant cost savings, lower the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for a newly deployed network and provide compatibility with future standards. Worldwide LTE is widely accepted as the air interface of choice for 4G networks. Majority of mobile operators, have identified that LTE will be necessary to fulfill the growing demands of data-hungry end users in the years to come. However, LTE will require additional hardware expenditures both on the radio and core networks. By using SDR today to satisfy short term capacity demands, mobile operators can reuse this hardware to later rollout LTE, thus minimizing costs and removing the need for radio networks upgrades when LTE enters the mass market.
