AT&T OKs iPhone VoIP Apps To Use Its 2G, 3G Networks

AT&T, Inc., has given Apple, Inc., its consent for the iPhone to support voice-over-Internet-protocol (VoIP) applications that use AT&T's 3G (third-generation), 2G, and Wi-Fi networks, the telecom carrier announced Oct. 6.rnThe FCC's Wireless Telecommunications Bureau had sent letters of inquiry to AT&T, Apple, and Google, Inc., last summer seeking information about Apple's reported decision to exclude the Google Voice application from the Apple App Store and what role AT&T might have played in the decision (TR, Aug. 15).rnAt the time, Apple said it had not rejected the application and was continuing to study it, while AT&T said that Apple had not consulted it about the Google Voice application but acknowledged that the companies had an agreement "that Apple would not take affirmative steps to enable an iPhone to use AT&T's wireless service (including 2G, 3G and Wi-Fi) to make VoIP calls without first obtaining AT&T's consent." AT&T also said then that it had no objection to VoIP applications for the iPhone that use Wi-Fi connectivity.
