Officials Debate Technologies To Detect Cellphones in Prisons

Prison chiefs from two states urged federal authorities at a recent Washington event to allow them to deploy - or at least to test - jamming technology to combat contraband mobile phones in prisons, and an official from the Federal Bureau of Prisons said that jamming will likely be one of several solutions that will be employed in his facilities. But other federal government and industry representatives noted that the 1934 Communications Act, as amended, prohibits jamming by nonfederal entities and expressed concern about the interference it could cause legitimate commercial and public safety communications.
