Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Inc., and several trade groups are painting a different picture of the state of competition in the wireless industry than smaller carriers, with the two largest providers and the trade groups saying the market is effectively competitive, while smaller entities point to a variety of indicators that they say show the sector is controlled by a duopoly. The smallest of the four national carriers, Sprint Nextel Corp. and T-Mobile US, Inc., take an in-between stance, saying the sector is competitive while also highlighting the need for regulatory actions so they and others can compete against Verizon Wireless and AT&T, including weighing spectrum below 1 gigahertz. The views were expressed in comments filed recently in WT docket 13-135 in response to a public notice released by the FCC's Wireless Telecommunications Bureau in May seeking comments for the agency's 17th report to Congress on the state of competition in the sector.
