The Obama administration on Sept. 14 announced more than $160 million in new and proposed spending to advance "smart cities" research and applications to address safety, energy, transportation, health, and other issues facing local communities. A broad breakdown of that $ 160 million total includes more than $35 million in new grants and more than $10 million in proposed investments for smart cities research infrastructure, to be administered by the National Science Foundation and National Institute of Standards and Technology, and nearly $70 million in new spending and more than $45 million in proposed investments to develop solutions for energy, transportation, and other issues, to be administered by the departments of Homeland Security, Transportation, Energy, and Commerce, and the Environmental Protection Agency.
