Judge to Cablevision: Stop Saying Verizon Lies

A federal judge on Aug. 11 granted Verizon Communications, Inc., a 14-day temporary restraining order (TRO) barring Cablevision Systems Corp. from advertising that Verizon lies in ads that claim it is the fastest Wi-Fi provider, and said that "Verizon is not lying to the public" when it makes those claims. In addition, the judge raised the possibility of imposing a permanent injunction if Cablevision does not cease "the liar advertising campaign." Ruling from the bench in Cablevision Systems Corp. v. Verizon Communications, Inc. (case CV-15-456), U.S. Magistrate Judge Gary R. Brown of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York said that Cablevision could have until the close of business on Aug. 14 to pull advertisements that claim "through any words, claims, depictions representations, or imagery pending trial that: Verizon is a liar, tells lies, has its facts so crooked, does not tell the truth, intentionally makes false statements or false claims, advertises claims that are untrue, not really true, not real, or not true, or otherwise accusing Verizon of dishonesty."
