EC Formally Adopts Privacy Shield Pact

The European Commission said on July 12 that it had formally adopted the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield agreement that was hammered out by negotiators earlier this year to take the place of the lapsed U.S.-EU Safe Harbor framework governing transatlantic data transfers. The EC adoption follows the agreement's approval earlier in July by European Union member states. "This new framework protects the fundamental rights of anyone in the EU whose personal data is transferred to the United States as well as bringing legal clarity for businesses relying on transatlantic data transfers," the EC said in a statement.
