House Panel Looks Past 5G To Promote 6G Technology

While discussing several bills designed to improve the security and deployment of 5G wireless networks, the House communications and technology subcommittee also looked ahead to the deployment of 6G networks during a June 30 hearing titled "A Safe Wireless Future: Securing our Networks and Supply Chain."Subcommittee members sought input from witnesses on nine pending bills that would generally task the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, the FCC, and other government agencies with taking steps to secure existing communications services and supply chains.But one bill, the Future Uses of Technology Upholding Reliable and Enhanced (FUTURE) Networks Act (HR 4045) seeks to place the U.S. at the head of the global pack to develop 6G technology.Introduced by Rep. Mike Doyle (D., Pa.), the subcommittee's chairman, and Reps. Bill Johnson (R., Ohio) and Lucy McBath (D., Ga.), HR 4045 "would require the Federal Communications Commission to create a 6G task force, with members appointed by the Chair, and comprising representatives from trusted companies, public interest groups, and government representatives at every level of government, including tribes," Rep. Doyle said at the hearing."The mandate of the task force would be to report on the possible uses, strengths, and limitations of sixth-gen-eration wireless technology, including any supply chain, cybersecurity, or other limitations that will need to be addressed as the wireless technology evolves. Convening a broad group of key stakeholders in the early stages of 6G development will ensure continued U.S. leadership in the global economy," he added.
