How will the evolving Web-based ecosystem scale to the next level? The answer might be found in the confines of the CO or data center. Not the traditional brick and mortar CO where proprietary solutions rule the game, however, but a neutral CO that gives emerging niche service providers an immediate footprint with high-bandwidth capacity from a number of backbone providers. The colocation market offers two flavors: neutral and non-neutral. Major backbone providers such as AT&T, Cable & Wireless and UUNet own non-neutral facilities designed to expand their respective international and national networks. Some focus on wholesaling capacity for ISPs and carrier markets; others provide capacity to large businesses. In this model, emerging carriers are married to their backbone providers for space and capacity.
